As we maneuver through the challenges of the workplace while trying to stay authentic and engaged, understanding the rules of engagement can get more and more challenging. And, as we evolve as people, team members and leaders, being connected and aligned around common objectives and shared values is not always easy. We come from different backgrounds, different ways of working, different ethnicities, generations and ways of identifying who we are. All of this can overshadow the fact that we are still people, and want to be appreciated, respected and embraced. And, opening up to who we are and ultimately being vulnerable is new to most of us.
There are few guidebooks for this, and, as we are all different, not many step-by-step instructions with a one size fits all approach. But, when we default back to a growth mindset, we can look for ways to take steps forward to help others and ourselves make an impact - a difference in our companies and the way we help them thrive. I happened upon a great book through Blinkist a few weeks ago, and it got me excited to purchase the book itself. Equity by Minal Bopiah is a book focused on building equitable systems to help socially conscious leaders with rewiring organizations to be more fair and inclusive.
What I like about the book is that its formulaic but adds optionality as we look at ourselves as unique leaders, as we look at our individual organizations and the ways in which we work. While there is no paint by number manuscript, the book does get us started and helps us realize when we have been raised with privilege (as I have) and how to be open and authentic to galvanize teams and make organizations work well. I am sure there are many books out there that can help us gain traction in engaging and building inclusive teams, but I think this is one of the more direct and honest efforts. The author really helps the reader to think about it in a way that can make a lasting and sustainable difference.
As we look at different ways that we integrate ESG into our organizations, we must realize that being Environmentally conscious is not the only issue for which we are solving. In fact, Governance and Social/Societal issues can often be more important. Having people work together, to support each other and to be "vulnerable and real" can change the face of a company – and make it revered and a great place to work. And, as the author states, we really need to celebrate our differences - from the Board Room to our grass roots teams.
Lightwheel Advisors is launching a suite of surveys this week addressing Environmental, Social and Governance issues, and many of you will be asked to participate. We greatly appreciate your support, and we realize that your insights and contributions can make the difference in driving change. We look forward to sharing the insights soon, and we appreciate your feedback and support.
In the meantime, check out Equity and Blinkist – both are great sources of insights and can help you learn and thrive – and potentially make a difference to the world in more ways than you think.
Thanks - Shaun
